Abstract: The National Park Service Southwest Alaska Network, headquartered in Anchorage, is interested in developing a Microsoft Access-based, single-user database to track lake ice data interpreted from MODIS satellite imagery. Currently, these data are tracked in an Excel spreadsheet with a separate worksheet for each year and separate worksheets for some lakes. The vision for the Access application is to consolidate all the MODIS data in a database application that has a user interface for simplified data entry, and built-in query tools for data mining, report development and data export. The application also needs to be portable in the sense that, even though it is single-user, it can be transferred from a networked office computing environment to a laptop and back for permit updating and querying in multiple locations.
