Abstract:

Performance Goals

The goal of this project is to enhance knowledge of and ability to share the complex scientific advancements made at Hanford during the Manhattan Project. This goal will be achieved through archival research, development of a literature review and research report, and creation of a series of podcasts. The project will be carried out by professors and students at Washington State University (WSU) in collaboration with National Park Service (NPS) Manhattan Project National Historical Park staff.

Project Objectives

Investigators from WSU and NPS staff will collaborate to accomplish the following objectives:

  1. Help ensure that the local, regional, national, and global significance of the scientific discoveries and technological advances made at Hanford during the Manhattan Project are recognized when the park develops cultural resource documentation, management and interpretation plans, and interpretive products.
  2. Develop reference materials and public history products that will enhance park staff and the public’s understanding of the science processes, design and construction of the Hanford’s plutonium production facilities, and advancements in worker protection from radiological, chemical, and other industrial hazards developed during the Manhattan Project at Hanford.
