Abstract: The work conducted under this Task Agreement will provide for the implementation of a long-term monitoring protocol at City of Rocks National Reserve and Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve 2008-2012. The monitoring protocol includes sampling of aspen and conifer stem density in pre-defined size classes in stands previously selected for long-term monitoring. Data will be analyzed according to protocol guidelines (Strand et al., 2007) for assessment of a long-term trend of aspen regeneration, stem density of mature aspen stems, dead aspen stems and conifers. Collected data will be compiled in annual reports and compared against pre-defined thresholds for aspen regeneration, density, and conifer cover and the estimated status and trend will serve as decision support for park managers. These long-term data will also serve as an important baseline in monitoring the potential effects of climate change.
