Abstract: Research study to determine the historic range and density of juniper within the Lava Beds ecosystem in order to guide fire management and historic landscape initiatives. The primary intent of this project is to address the following questions: 1) To what extent has juniper increased in the monument since Eurasian settlement?
2) How has the presence of juniper developed over time (chronology)?
3) Does plant community or landscape position influence woodland encroachment and structure?
4) What was the composition and structure of pre-settlement landscape communities?
5) What type of sites are pre-settlement trees located on and what is their age distribution?
6) Can the fire history of the monument be expanded?
