Alternative Project Title: To Enhance Both the Near-real time Daily Data Portal for Gridded Information and Basin Tools for Use in National Water Supply Forecast Modeling and Analysis

Abstract:

To enhance both the near-real time daily data portal for gridded information and basin tools for use in national water supply forecast modeling and analysis.

The following five objectives will be accomplished during the project period as identified on the Notice of Award.

  1. Geospatial Daily Data Databasing and Data Serving – Design and develop an internet GIS data portal for integrating different sources of geospatial data, such as the University of Arizona Daily Snow Water Equivalent (SWE) grid dataset, into the existing SNODAS data portal. NRCS or general GIS users can access different sources of geospatial and/or SWE data summarized for the elevation-banded watershed areas for NWCC active forecast stations or other user-specified watersheds.
  2. Developing a Turn-Key Data Portal Deployment System for Creating Mirrored Data Portals on NRCS IT Infrastructure – The goal is to provide reliable server services using NRCS existing IT infrastructure and reduce the reliance on Portland State University’s IT infrastructure. The data portal deployment system allows the transfer of the daily geospatial data portal development knowledge and tools developed by the Recipient to NRCS staff and creates a more reliable data service for watershed-based climate data users.
  3. Providing Routine Updates and Servicing of Basin Analysis GIS Datasets Used for Conservation Planning – The task involved the routine maintenance of GIS data and webservices, such as, PRISM precipitation; fire burn severity data, and snowpack monitoring station data, etc. The data are currently distributed as web services on PSU and NRCS ArcGIS Online systems.
  4. Providing General GIS Tools Update and Maintenance for Basin Analysis – The goals are to allow the continuing use of desktop basin analysis tools developed in the previous projects and enable them to interface with newly available online GIS resources and ESRI ArcGIS Pro desktop GIS. A key function to be implemented is to perform AOl delineation in ArcGIS Pro.
  5. Providing General GIS Service Support – The goal is to expedite the effective adoption of new GIS technologies, such as Lidar (laser altimetry) into NWCC’s water supply forecast workflow and the coordination of state-level forecast station database management.
