Abstract: Six-week field school at which NPS, UVM and partner personnel are trained in historic preservation , specifically restoring the windows of the Forked Lightning ranch house. Historic wooden six-light casement windows (ca. 1925) survive on the primary façade of the ranch house building. Much of the rest of the building’s historic windows were replaced with aluminum sliding windows that will now be restored with wooden windows that replicate the unique historic millwork. This project has research, training, and implementation goals, and NPS participates in all project phases as a collaborator with UVM, who provides the necessary expertise in period styles and production technology. The project also has a significant educational component that engages student interns and park staff to collaboratively design in-kind replacement windows and educational training materials to help meet the NPS mission of interpretation and preservation of this important historic site.
