Abstract: This project is a 6-week field school where the National Park Service (NPS), University of Vermont (UVM), and partner personnel will conduct a program of research, training, and implementation in the conservation and repair of historic exterior doors and windows at the Trading Post on the Forked Lightning Ranch in Pecos National Historical Park (PNHP). Historic millwork in the building survives with most windows and doors dating from the period of significance (ca.1880-1930). Condition of the woodwork varies from fair to poor with most of the deterioration resulting from wood-boring insect activity and fungal decay. NPS will provide existing drawings and will collaborate with UVM to complete condition surveys and identify repair strategies. UVM will develop a work plan and field school curriculum, with the field school activity lasting approximately six weeks during summer 2010. This project has a significant educational component, engaging student interns and park staff to collaboratively design and install historic exterior doors and windows and educational training materials to help meet the NPS mission of interpretation and preservation of this important historic site.
