Abstract: The National Park Service is documenting significant historic properties across the nation that are associated with the history of the Civil Rights Movement and Racial Desegregation in Public Education, two themes important in American history. The focus is primary on the African-American community and properties associated with these themes. The purpose of this project is to conduct preliminary research and identify sites in the Pacific Northwest that are associated with these themes, expanding the search to include sites relevant for other minority groups including Native Americans, Mexican-Americans, Chinese-Americans, and Japanese-Americans. The intent is to have a database of PNW historic sites that best represent these important themes in our nation’s history and therefore may be eligible for listing in the National Register of Historic Places on a local, regional or national level.
