Abstract: A determination of whether or not to increase cruise ship use in Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve (GBNPP) by as much as 32% above existing levels will rely upon guidance provided through scientific studies. A comprehensive research framework examining the potential effects of cruise ships on the physical, marine biological and socio-cultural environments of GBNPP is currently being implemented through a number of studies.

The goal of the Stakeholder Outreach and Research Communications Program (SORC) is to enhance public understanding of the cruise ship research program and to add legitimacy to subsequent decision-making through targeted outreach and communication efforts to stakeholder communities. Designed in four phases, the SORC program will: (1) develop effective messaging, outreach and communication strategies; (2) establish SORC as a recognized research program information source and nexus; (3) conduct outreach and communication activities through a variety of channels and mechanisms, and; (4) evaluate the performance and potential continuation of the program.
