Abstract: This project is a collaborative effort between the Alaska Region of the National Park Service (NPS) and Saint Mary’s University of Minnesota (SMUMN) to develop a stewardship strategy for creating National Hydrologic Data (NHD), and to implement that strategy and create a US Geological Survey (USGS) compliant NHD database for Alaska’s National Parks. The first phase of the project is to develop the NHD stewardship strategy, which includes the following: differentiating and describing the specific roles and responsibilities for both NPS and SMUMN in the NHD development and editing process; describing workflow processes utilizing standard USGS NHD editing processes and quality assurance tools; specifying USGS data checkout procedures to ensure compliance and national data conformity; procedures for including Alaska NHD data into the national NHD database; describing NPS workflow processes to ensure staff expertise and local knowledge is fully captured in making editing decisions; and describing project management, coordination, and production task and workflow definitions. The second phase of the project is to implement this strategy to establish an NPS NHD stewardship production program in partnership with SMUMN and USGS. If funding is available, implementation of specific NHD data development projects for park areas within Alaska will be generated by modifications to the Task Agreement.
