Abstract: This project is a collaborative effort by the National Park Service (NPS) and Portland State University (PSU) to develop interpretation and public education support relating to the NeCus Village site, within the City of Cannon Beach, on the north coast of Oregon. This village was historically occupied by Nehalem and Clatsop tribal members, and was visited in January 1806 by members of the Lewis and Clark Expedition, and is currently located on the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail (LECL) The site is now planned as the venue for a combined archaeological site preservation effort and an interpretive facility addressing the natural and Native American cultural history of the village. This project will conduct research to develop a report that contains prescriptions for site protection and interpretation consistent with the site’s Native American heritage in coordination with tribal members, and will conduct a reconnaissance-level archaeological investigation to supplement the project report.
