Abstract:

Performance Goals – The NPS National Historic Preservation (NHP) Programs support public participation in preservation of the Nation’s cultural heritage through documentation programs and research and training in historic preservation and conservation. The NHP Programs also set standards for historic preservation and provide technical and financial preservation assistance.

The goal of this project is to develop and provide the necessary management, operational and administrative support to develop and present jointly, at such places as may be agreed upon, an annual Pacific Northwest Preservation Field School (Field School), through which educational and training opportunities are provided in the areas of preservation planning, interdisciplinary research and survey methodologies, and preservation treatments and technologies.

The Field School is an annual hands-on school that is developed and presented jointly by the NPS, Recipient, and the following related partner organizations: Oregon Parks and Recreation Department, Oregon State Historic Preservation Office, Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission, Washington State Department of Archeology and Historic Preservation, Idaho Department of Parks and Recreation, and Idaho State Historical Society (Parties). The goal of the Field School is to provide students, agencies’ staff, and the general public opportunities to gain knowledge and experience in hands-on historic preservation stabilization, repair, documentation, evaluation and other technical skills through three to five one-week consecutive sessions.

Administration of the Field School is through the Recipient Historic Preservation Program in collaboration with NPS and other Parties through a separate agreement. This project will provide support for the administration, operation, and management of the Field School over the next five years, subject to availability of funds. This project will help ensure that administrative and logistical tasks needed to successfully carry out the planning, execution, and documentation of the Field School are carried out in a timely and effective manner.

This project between the NPS and the Recipient does not include contributions in support of the Field School by other Parties. Other Parties who choose to contribute to the support of the Field School will do so through separate mechanisms in accordance with their respective policies and regulations.
