GLOBAL HEALTH INTERNSHIP – HEART SCREENING IN RURAL CHINA

As a long-time volunteer for the China California Heart Watch [501(3)c], I wanted to let you know about an exciting, international, service-based internship program that our organization offers to pre-health undergraduates in the US and abroad. If you think your students would be interested in traveling to China, working alongside US-trained physicians, and serving as a valuable team member in our mobile health clinics and child screening programs, please consider forwarding them the information below. I would be happy to answer your questions and discuss our program with you in more detail over email or telephone at any time. Thank you for your kind consideration! GLOBAL HEALTH INTERNSHIP – HEART SCREENING IN RURAL CHINA The China California Heart Watch is a non-for-profit public charity whose mission includes medical research, teaching and clinical care in rural Yunnan Province, China. We are seeking students, particularly those interested in future careers in medicine, public health or related fields to participate in one of several internships this year. Our internships afford students first-hand experience of medical problems—particularly cardiovascular diseases—and care in impoverished communities of Yunnan. OBJECTIVE: The objective of our internship program is to provide free healthcare to those in need in Yunnan, create awareness of healthcare delivery issues in rural China, and to provide a highly meaningful, hands-on, clinical volunteer experience for students pursuing a career in the health professions. STUDENTS: Each of our four remaining internships is open to 10-20 students. Prospective interns must apply and will be interviewed to determine suitability. Applicants must have an expressed interest in health and serving underserved communities. As interns will be working in the Chinese countryside, knowledge of Mandarin is desirable, but is not necessary and is by no means a selection criteria. PROGRAMS: There are four remaining internship programs for this year. For each, students will arrive in the old city of Dali (a popular tourist destination in Yunnan but also where we have one of our two permanent clinics) to undergo three days of intense training and certification in cardiac auscultation. After training, students will travel to surrounding areas to begin clinics in villages and townships located in the pristine, mountainous landscapes of Yunnan. During the internships, students will help screen thousands of children for congenital heart disease and have a very active role in setting up and running our mobile health clinics, which focus primarily on chronic disease management but also offer referrals for acute care. Participants will travel and work with faculty from Kunming and Dali Universities as well as from medical schools in the United States. Students will also have the opportunity to help conduct a clinical research program while staying in villages in Yunnan.
