Preceptorships

SURG 505 – Surgery Preceptorship

This course provides first and second year medical students the opportunity to gain experience with the field of surgery and with surgery faculty. Students will have the opportunity to observe general aspects of surgical practice including but not limited to:

  • Routine clinical/surgical problems
  • Practice limitations
  • Physician/Patient/Nurse relationship in a clinic and/or hospital setting
  • Exposure to the surgery in practice

Grading: Students will receive one credit per 32 hours of participation. Course is only eligible for Credit/No Credit grade.

Please Note: Medical students participating in preceptorships may only participate on an observational basis ONLY. Students will not be allowed “hands-on” patient care experience. Students are responsible for identifying a faculty member to act as the sponsoring preceptor. Student must request department permission to add this course at least one academic quarter in advance. Student responsibilities during the Foundations Phase take precedence over preceptorships so please discuss with your academic advisor to determine the best time to participate in a preceptorship.


Research

SURG 499 – Undergraduate Research

This course provides undergraduate university students an opportunity to participate in ongoing research projects or carry out independent research projects and gain practical experience in experimental design under the direct supervision of selected Department of Surgery faculty.

Grading: Course is only eligible for Credit/No Credit grade.

SURG 600 – Graduate Research

This course provides graduate medical students an opportunity to participate in ongoing research projects or carry out independent research projects and gain practical experience in experimental design under the direct supervision of selected Department of Surgery faculty.
