Goals and Objectives

  • Expand knowledge of surgical disease and enhance the ability to manage comprehensively the problems encountered in surgical patients
  • Participate in patient care (emphasizing diagnosis, preoperative and postoperative care)
  • Manage surgical emergencies and outpatient follow-up of discharged patients
  • Develop polished, clinical skills in dealing with medical and surgical problems

SURG 664: General Surgery Sub-Internship – Puget Sound VA Medical Center – Seattle, WA -PERMISSION ONLY- 

PLEASE NOTE: Credentialing at the VA is an extensive process and can take several weeks to complete. It is important to being this process no less than eight weeks prior to the start of your rotation.

Site Onboarding Tasks: No less than eight weeks prior (or sooner if requested by the site), please provide the following information to the site coordinator:

Students will also need an HR appointment at the VA. Please bring the following to your appointment:

Fingerprinting: All personnel at VAMC is required to have fingerprinting completed within 120 of the start of your rotations. These incoming fingerprints, “Courtesy Fingerprints” may be done at any VA facility throughout the United States. Students that have an unexpired VA badge do not need to repeat fingerprinting. Do not wait until the last minute to complete this step as processing time can vary.

 

Visiting Students: Please advise the UW Dept. of Surgery Education Team (surgstus@uw.edu) who your completed grade evaluation should be returned to following the completion of your rotation.

 


SURG 688: General Surgery Sub-Internship – University of Washington Medical Center – Seattle, WA -PERMISSION ONLY- 

Site Coordinator: Dept. of Surgery Education Team | surgstus@uw.edu

Check-in Instructions: Students will receive an email verifying their enrollment in SURG 688 approximately six weeks prior to the start of the rotation. Additionally, students will be contacted regarding team assignments and which resident to contact regarding first day activities.

UW Students: There is no additional credentialing needed for this rotation.

Visiting Students: No less than six weeks prior to the start of the rotation, please ensure that you have provided all the information that was requested in your VSLO offer letter. Additionally, please advise the site coordinator who your completed grade evaluation should be returned to following the completion of your rotation.

 


SURG 601: General Surgery Sub-Internship – Swedish Medical Center – Seattle, WA  -PERMISSION ONLY- 

This general surgery sub-internship is intended for students who are specifically interested in pursuing a general surgery residency at Swedish Medical Center. Interested students should initially apply for a rotation through the Swedish Medical Center’s General Surgery Residency Program using the link below:

SURG 608: General Surgery Sub-Internship – Virginia Mason Medical Center – Seattle, WA -PERMISSION ONLY-

This general surgery sub-internship is intended for students who are specifically interested in pursuing a general surgery residency at Virginia Mason Medical Center. Interested students should initially apply for a rotation through the Virginia Mason Medical Center’s General Surgery Residency Program using the link below:

Virginia Mason General Surgery Elective Application

If accepted by Virginia Mason to participate in a rotation, students will be granted departmental permission to add this elective by the UW Department of Surgery Medical Student Program Administrator. Participation in this course will satisfy UW SOM Sub-I requirements.

TB Testing

This site may require proof of a negative TB test(s). Even though this is no longer a requirement of the UWSOM, students are required to comply with any site specific TB testing requirements. Please contact the site coordinator to inquire if a TB test is required.

SURG 690: General Surgery Elective – Alaska Native Medical Center – Anchorage, AK -PERMISSION ONLY-

This general surgery elective is intended for students with an interest in exploring surgery in one of Alaska’s few trauma hospitals. The General Surgery Clinic at ANMC specializes in procedures of the neck, chest, abdomen, and extremities. Permission is required to enroll in this elective. This site is limited in the number of students that they are able to take. Please contact UW Department of Surgery Medical Student Program Manager to request permission for this course. Permission will be granted based on the availability of the site to accept students for the requested time frame.

PLEASE NOTE: Permission requests can only be considered within 6 months of the rotation date. Requests for rotations greater than 6 months in the future will not be considered.
