Goals and Objectives

  • Understand systematic evaluation of a trauma patient, initial trauma resuscitation, stabilization and transfer
  • Understand the medical and surgical aspects common to a trauma patient
  • Understand utilization of emergency diagnostic techniques
  • Understand the preparation and rapid deployment of a patient in need of emergency surgery
  • Understand airway management of the trauma patient in multiple settings
  • Understand the early and late postoperative care of the trauma patient including coordination of care
  • Understand the outpatient and follow up care of the trauma patient
  • Follow a patient with acute care needs from ER to OR to ICU to recovery and rehab or as outpatient in trauma clinic; students will round on trauma patients in ICU and follow through the continuum of care.

Site Onboarding Tasks: No less than six weeks prior to the start of the rotation, contact the site coordinators to confirm your participation in the course and receive important instructions. Additionally, contact Kim Phillips to begin the credentialing process. Completed GME forms will need to be submitted to Kim no less than thirty days prior to the start of the rotation.

  • Immunization record (including verification of Influenza Vaccine if rotating between November 1st and March 31st)
  • Letter of Good Standing (available in eValue)
  • Completed forms from St. Alphonsus GME website
    • Clerkship Rotation form
    • Confidentiality Agreement
    • Orientation Acknowledgement

All paperwork must be completed and returned to the credentialing coordinator no less than thirty days prior to the start of the rotation. Failure to complete tasks within this timeline may result in the cancellation of your elective.


TB Testing

This site may require proof of a negative TB test(s). Even though this is no longer a requirement of the UWSOM, students are required to comply with any site specific TB testing requirements. Please contact the site coordinator to inquire if a TB test is required.
