This proposal aims to reduce dinitrogen to ammonia electrocatalytically, replacing expensive stoichiometric chemical reductants with an electrode capable of delivering electrons generated by any type of electrical power. Pincer complexes are being evaluated as electrocatalysts for N2 reduction in solution and bound to a cathode. The research approach to electrocatalytic N2 reduction integrates experimental catalyst design and synthesis in collaboration with Patrick Holland at Yale University and technoeconomic analysis in collaboration with Gal Hochman and Robert Kopp at Rutgers University.
