Study examines severe hypoglycemia with intensive treatment for type 1 diabetes

Researchers analyzed data from the Diabetes Control and Complications Trial and Epidemiology of Diabetes Interventions and Complications study that ran between 1983 and 1993 and found that type 1 diabetes patients in the intensive treatment group had three times as many severe hypoglycemic episodes as those in the non-intensive group. The findings in Diabetes Care revealed that more than 20 years after the trial ended, those in the non-intensive group experienced 0.41 episodes of severe hypoglycemia per year, compared with 0.37 among those in the formerly intensively controlled group.
