Study looks at antidiabetes drug prescribing trends in the US

The use of metformin as a first-line therapy among type 2 diabetes patients increased from 60%of patients in 2005 to 77% in 2016, while use of sulfonylureas declined from 20% to 8% and insulin use rose from 8% to 10%, according to a study in Diabetes Care. Researchers evaluated data on 1,023,340 adults from the US Centricity Electronic Medical Records and found that 48% of those who used metformin as a first-line therapy had initiated a second treatment at a mean A1C of 8.4%.
