Study finds reduced microvascular complications with bariatric surgery

A study in The Lancet Diabetes & Endocrinology showed that obese patients with either prediabetes or type 2 diabetes who underwent bariatric surgery had lower incident microvascular disease than patients in a usual care group. Swedish researchers used a cohort of 4,032 patients ages 37 to 60 and found the lowest hazard ratio for microvascular complications, after adjusting for baseline glycemic status, was for those with prediabetes.
