Faculty Profile: Caroline Simpson

Simpson Frees her Students from the Lab Professor Caroline Simpson takes full advantage of energy resources in and outside of Mary Gates Hall during summerquarters, when she teaches English 257, Introduction to Asian American Literature. Cool June afternoons find her students busy in the CIC computer lab, discussing via the local-area bulletin board themes of identity and global culture in John Okada’s No-No Boy, Jessica Hagedorn’s Dogeaters, and Bharati Mukherjee’s Jasmine. But after researching online scholarly opinion on those topics, students might well take their differences outside, where the July sun provides plenty of heat, fueling in most satisfying ways class discussion and debate.
