FHL Open House

On Saturday, May 10th, Friday Harbor Labs opened its doors to the local community and island day-trippers alike. The annual FHL Open House once again drew a crowd of more than 600 visitors who were delighted to explore the Labs via self-guided tours. Most research labs were open and scientists and students showcased their marine science research, answered questions, and provided a wide variety of demonstrations.

In continuing Open House traditions, Dennis Willows popped and served popcorn aboard the R/V Centennial and Richard Strathmann oversaw plankton tows and viewing under a microscope in the dive locker.

SCUBA demonstrations attracted huge crowds of interested children and adults.

There were also three scientific lectures:
• “Ocean Acidification at Friday Harbor Labs” - Dr. Jim Murray
• “Picture this! The changing face of intertidal systems” - Dr. Terrie Klinger
• “Ecology of the Rocky Subtidal Zone” - Dr. Ken Sebens

And finally, the Dining Hall offered barbeque fare accompanied by marimba music.

It was an amazing day that left visitors eager to return for the next Open House in May 2015.
