FHL Student Support

By Rachel Anderson

Every year at this time, the staff at FHL are busy expertly preparing for the upcoming summer sessions. Over the past few months, students and research fellows have received both their acceptances and the news of the financial support they will receive. Some students have been to the Friday Harbor Labs before and eagerly anticipate returning. Others have only heard about the life-changing experience that awaits them. We look forward to welcoming one and all to San Juan Island these next few months!

Financial support is critical for almost all of our students. We are so grateful to the many generous individuals who support FHL students by supporting FHL endowments and current-use programs. This year we have added three new student support endowments that honor important FHL community contributors, Eugene Kozloff, Pamela Roe and M. Patricia (Trish) Morse. We continue to fundraise for these new endowments and are grateful for the generous donations that we have received to date.

The Adopt-a-Student Program in particular serves as a main source of financial support to students taking FHL summer and fall courses. Flo McAlary established the FHL Adopt-a-Student Endowed Fund in late 2014 and has generously offered to match all gifts that are made to the new endowment, (1:1) up to $25,000. We encourage everyone to take advantage of this opportunity! Thank you, Flo!

Truly one of the biggest joys of my summer is introducing students to the sponsors or donors who support them. The students/fellows are so grateful and are absolutely thrilled to have the opportunity to say thank you in person. What a gift they have received! We often hear back from our students. Drew McWhirter from the UW attended 2015's spring ZooBot quarter and then summer Ecology Between & Below Pacific Tides course with its scientific dive option, and shared this:

Again, thank you for your support of FHL students and fellows. They are indeed our future!
