Welcome!
Friday
Harbor Labs Science Outreach Program is a unique science education
program that brings exciting, inquiry-based and relevant environmental
science into the elementary, middle and high school classrooms
(K-12) of the San Juan Islands. We have developed a set
of hands-on projects specifically designed to complement and
enhance the current science curriculum at local schools. All
of the projects focus on involving students in the process of
science – observing,
asking questions, predicting, collecting data, analyzing data
and making conclusions. We emphasize using the scientific method
and how the data is relevant to other scientists.
Our program gives students the opportunity to
ask questions and participate in experiments so they realize they
themselves are scientists. We work with students in the field,
lab, classroom and on the U.W. Research Vessel Kittiwake to show them that science is interesting, fun and important. The
program provides experiences that foster students to become environmentally
aware and scientifically educated stewards of local marine and
freshwater environments.

Friday Harbor Labs Science Outreach
Program (FHLSOP) was established in 2001 and is currently structured as
a partnership between the University of Washington Friday Harbor
Laboratories, San Juan Island School District and Spring Street
International School. The resulting program is distinct in its partnering of research
scientists, K-12 students, teachers and resource managers with
the goal of creating an integrated set of projects that teach science
and environmental awareness to students. In addition, student scientist from four of the FHL University courses are mentors for 1st, 3rd, and 6th grade
FHLSOP projects. CLICK below for Upcoming Events:
