History 498B: Nature and Culture in American History (Course Syllabus)
Source/Contributor: Matthew W. Klingle
Course: HIST 498
Date: Spring 1999
Format: PDF

Ten-page course syllabus for a seminar class that includes a proviso for students presenting their own scholarly research. It also outlines a "substantial" reading load of 200 pages per week and explains this "is not unreasonable for an upper-division course at a university of this caliber." Note: Several parts of this syllabus could be used in any course with response papers, presentations, and longer papers. Section headings: "Course Description," "Readings," "Course Requirements" (includes option of rewriting short essay and participation which is weighted at 30 percent), "Preliminary Schedule," "Short Critical Response Paper," "Class Presentation and Leading Discussion," and "Critical Thought Paper." A final note on grading gives the instructor the option to raise students' final grade due to "extraordinary involvement or improvement."
