A teaching portfolio is a tool of professional development that provides you with a way to showcase how, why, and how well you teach currently, as well as demonstrate your potential to further develop your teaching skills. Although it has little effect on history department grad students' ranking for departmental funding, it is a required part of the annual funding application for most grad students. Here are some guides, suggestions, and resources you can use to assemble and then polish your teaching portfolio so that, when the time comes to look for that academic job, you'll have something that reflects you're ability to teach.
