Benjamin A. Gilman Scholarship for study abroad

Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship

The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants for U.S. citizen undergraduate students of limited financial means to pursue academic studies or credit-bearing, career-oriented internships abroad. Such international exchange is intended to better prepare U.S. students to assume significant roles in an increasingly global economy and interdependent world.

This scholarship was created by the US Department of State to increase access to study or internships  abroad for students of  high financial need.  To be eligible for this award, students must be receiving a Pell grant as part of their financial aid package at the time they apply.  This scholarship is open to all undergraduate majors.

Award amounts vary but students can receive up to $5,000.  Students planning to begin their study abroad programs between December 15, 2016 and April 15th 2017 should apply by October 4, 2016.  This scholarship is one of the most accessible study abroad scholarships out there.   Students must be receiving college credit for their programs but only need to be abroad for a minimum of 28 consecutive days to be eligible.  In addition, the scholarship application does not require letters of recommendation.  More information about this scholarship and selection criteria can be found by clicking on the following link:    http://www.iie.org/programs/gilman-scholarship-program#.V73OHCgrKM8

The Global Opportunities office is here to support students throughout the entire application process.  Students interested in applying or who have additional questions can set up an appointment to meet with Kiana Parker by emailing goglobal@uw.edu
