This Tuesday (1/29) Alpha Epsilon Delta (AED) is hosting a meeting in Bagley 154 at 6:30 pm that will feature a medical student panel.

There will be free pizza, and it will be an opportunity to learn from those who just went through the process.

The David Geffen School of Medicine at UCLA offers a comprehensive, structured re-application program designed to assist students from disadvantaged backgrounds who have been unsuccessful in gaining admission to any U.S medical school. RAP is an 11-month program that is conducted in two sessions.  The Summer sessions begins June  to July 2019 and the Academic year session that runs from September 2019 through May 2020 for each cohort.

Students are eligible for UCLA RAP if they -meet all of the following prerequisites:

• Previously unsuccessful in gaining admission to any U.S. medical school
• Be committed to practice in an underserved community
• Come from an educationally and/or economically disadvantaged background
• Undergraduate degree from an accredited U.S college or university
• Have a minimum science GPA of 2.7 or higher
• For students who took the MCAT 2012-2014 or later, have a minimum combined score of 20
• For students who took the MCAT 2015, have a minimum combined score of 491
• Submit three (3) Letters of Recommendation
• Applicants must be a legal resident of California or provide documentation of approved eligibility of approved eligibility for the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) in the State of California.

Program Information:

Summer Session (June – July, 2019)
The program begins June 2019 and ends July 2019. Please be aware that the six week summer session requires a commitment of 6 days and some evening participation each week in addition to homework and group study. Therefore, students will not be able to hold part-time employment during that time period. Program includes:

• MCAT review and preparation workshops
• Mentoring from current UCLA medical students, faculty and RAP alumni
• Personal and professional development sessions to build confidence to re-apply
• Individual and group advising with other re-applicants to medical school
• Service and volunteer opportunities with local community health fairs, and nonprofit and healthcare facilities

Academic Session (September 2019 – May 2020)

• Upper division coursework through UC Extension or Cal State schools (as recommended)
  • UCLA Extension Summer session starts June 2019
• Medical school re-application preparation and strategies
• Group and one-on-one mentoring and advising with program advisors, faculty, RAP alumni and current UCLA medical students
• Interview preparation
• Regular meetings with program advisors, faculty, RAP alumni and current UCLA medical students

The Summer Health Professions Education Program (SHPEP) is a free summer enrichment program focused on improving access to information and resources for college students interested in the health professions. SHPEP’s goal is to strengthen the academic proficiency and career development of students underrepresented in the health professions and prepare them for a successful application and matriculation to health professions schools.

These students include, but are not limited to, individuals who identify as African American/Black, American Indian and Alaska Native and Hispanic/Latino, and who are from communities of socioeconomic and educational disadvantage.

SHPEP offers students a variety of academic and career experiences:

• Academic enrichment in the basic sciences and quantitative topics.
• Learning and study skills development, including  methods of individual and group learning.
• Clinical exposure through small-group rotations in health care settings, simulation experiences, and seminars. This is limited to 5% of program time for all the sites.
• Career development sessions directed toward exploration of the health professions, the admissions process, and the development of an individualized education plan.
• A financial literacy and planning workshop that informs students of financial concepts and strategies.
• A health policy seminar series  to expose scholars to a larger view of health care, health systems, and the social determinants of health.
• An introduction to interprofessional education that addresses effective collaboration across health professions.

University of Washington School of Dentistry’s ASDA chapter is hosting one of its main predental events, Dive into Dentistry Day. This workshop gives you the chance to get hands on experience and gain an insider’s perspective on life in dental school.

With current UW dental students and faculty running the show, you’ll get a chance to learn all about life at UWSOD. There will be a chance to meet the Assistant Director of Admissions, Dr. Sue Coldwell, and hear about how admissions work at UWSOD.

They will teach you how to drill and fill a cavity preparation, sculpt a tooth out of wax, suture, take an impression, and ace your dental school interviews. By the time you’re done, you’ll be practically ready to work with your own patients! This is a great opportunity to learn about dental school, meet some fellow pre-dents, get all your questions answered, and build up those ever important resumés.

The SRF Summer Scholars and Postbaccalaureate Fellowship Programs offer undergraduate students the opportunity to conduct biomedical research to combat diseases of aging, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s disease. Millions of people in the U.S. alone suffer from debilitating chronic pain. The Innovations in Pain Research Summer Program will expose seven University of Washington undergraduate students to interdisciplinary research in pain to stimulate interest in future careers in pain research.

This program will immerse undergraduate students in research to better understand pain and treatment mechanisms, develop new therapies, and improve access to evidence-based pain care.

Undergraduates in biological sciences, psychology, nursing, social work, and/or engineering-related fields who are interested in exploring either basic science or clinical research in pain treatment are encouraged to apply.

Pharmacy Volunteer Responsibilities:

Volunteers help the Pharmacy staff prepack medication using appropriate techniques, perform outdates checking in required areas, assist in maintaining department supplies for  areas of use by staff, and follow Seattle Children’s policies and procedures. Volunteers will work at all times under the supervision of a licensed Pharmacist or Pharmacy technician.

Pharmacy Volunteer Requirements:

·         Must be 18 years of age with High School Diploma or GED Equivalent

·         Must commit to 100 hours of service on a regular weekly three-hour shift for a duration of at least 10 consecutive months including summer

·         Must complete required vaccinations and consent to state background check

·         Must have or acquire an active Washington State Pharmacy Assistant License
