Maggie Avener spent her undergraduate years studying environmental engineering at MIT. After graduating in 2007, she came to UW to learn more about environmental fluid mechanics. Her research is currently centered around lab experiments on the rotating table in Harris Hydraulic Lab, designed to simulate the effects of time-variable discharge on a buoyant coastal plume. Outside of school, Maggie's interests include cooperative living, community radio, home carbonation, and rock climbing. Maggie tries to think about interesting fluid mechanics whenever she can, whether she's running experiments in the lab, chatting with friends about the non-newtonian-ness of ketchup over dinner, or reading oceanography papers while bivying on the side of El Cap.
