Observations

You will be expected to observe 3 different instrumental rehearsals from among the following: senior high band, senior high orchestra, junior high/middle school band, junior high/middle school orchestra, marching band, jazz band. Each observation should be carried out at a different school site and with a different, full-time, certified teacher. Each student will be expected to hand in (1) a written report of the observations addressing the questions in the outline and (2) a completed observation verification form for each teacher visited.

Teaching Sessions / Self-evaluations

Each of you will have two opportunities to teach your peer ensemble on one of the scores assigned from the score packet. These sessions should demonstrate your understanding of rehearsal frames and effective teaching behavior. Following your second teaching session, you will be expected to complete a self-evaluation focusing on specific aspects of your teaching. Prior to and following your teaching sessions, you are welcome to meet with any of the instructors to review your plan, evaluate your success and receive feedback.

Literature Selection

You and your colleagues have been given a budget of $800.00 to purchase new literature for the instrumental music program. Given the recording collection your group has received in class, select the pieces you (as a group) wish to purchase. Collaboratively, write one paragraph for each piece in which you describe why you chose it; include the composer/arranger and price. Come to class with copies for each of your class colleagues. Be prepared to share a brief portion of a recording of one of your selections and be ready to explain why it was your favorite.

Score Analysis & Presentation

Each student will be assigned one of the four scores in the course packet to analyze in detail (for the Bartok, please analyze any 5 of the 10 movements). Following the outline presented in class, complete an analysis of your assigned score that includes historical, stylistic, contextual and formal information. You may work on this in a group and will present this collaboratively, but everyone will be expected to turn in an individual analysis. Use textual, graphical and musical formats as appropriate.

Literature Evaluations

Using the literature evaluation form below as a guide, please evaluate 10 instrumental pieces for their appropriateness for use in various school ensembles as follows:

2 string orchestra
2 full orchestra
2 band marches
2 easy/very easy band
2 medium band

Using the solo and ensemble repertoire evaluations form below, evaluate 3 solo and 3 ensemble pieces. They should be of differing levels of difficulty and for instruments other than your own (in regard to solos).

Be sure to include all requested information about your selections.
