Richard Berger, MD, professor of urology at the University of Washington, is
director of the Provider Excellence Program. He became interested in
provider wellness after seeing and experiencing the stress and
difficulties of practicing medicine in academic medical centers. He
has personally found that the methods used in this program are valuable
tools in preventing and treating the stress and burnout that is
frequent in health care providers who give so much of themselves for
their patients. He has trained at the Center for Mindfulness at the
University of Massacheusetts and the Mindfulness Awareness Research
Center at the University of California at Los Angeles. He continues to
attend retreats and continuing education in stress reduction and
mindfulness areas.
He would much appreciate comments and suggestions for improvement and
integration of provider wellness as a priority for our medical center
along with patient care, fiduciary responsibility, and research.
Health care ultimately comes down to the caring and health of its
providers.
