Child Development
Using the Child Development Guide
[Cartoon: Family hanging out around the house]

The Child Development Guide will help you determine your child's developmental needs.

  1. Find your child's age range in the right hand column below.
  2. Click the area of development you are interested in. This will jump to that part of the Child Development Guide.
  3. Read the "Normal Characteristics" (left) column in the Child Development Guide.
  4. If your child does not have these characteristics, work backwards (in most cases) in the guide to find the characteristics of your child. At the bottom of each section is a link to the same area at an earlier age.
  5. Remember your child's development may be at different stages in different areas.
  6. When you find the characteristics of your child, consult the right hand column for "Suggested Behaviors for Effective Parenting." As your child moves on to the next stage you can continue this process, moving forward to his or her real age.
  7. To return to this page click on your browser's BACK button or select this page from the history list.
