1. Situation: Seven year old Kim leaves a mess in the kitchen.

A Send her to bed a half hour early.
B Call her into the kitchen to clean up her mess.
Right! Calling her back to clean up the mess teaches her the correct behavior (cleaning) and is related to the transgression. It enhances her feeling of being capable and responsible (part of her self-concept). It is effective discipline.

A Establish a mandatory study table time on school nights.
B Take away his allowance for a month.



[Cartoon: Mom to Victor "It's ok to say I'm mad at you, but don't use nasty names."3. Situation: Four year old Victor calls you unpleasant names when you tell him "No more cookies until after dinner."

A Call him the same names and send him to the corner for 30 minutes.
B State "No name calling" and initiate a four minute maximum time out. When the time out is over offer acceptable words, such as "I'm mad."

A Mutually review restitution options when all parties are calmer, and decide together on the appropriate restitution.
B Immediately yell "You lose your clothing allowance for that!"
