NEW EXTENDED DEADLINE! Call for Papers Special Issue of JCSCW Supporting Scientific Collaboration Through Cyberinfrastructure and e-Science Guest Editors: Charlotte P. Lee, David Ribes, Matthew Bietz , Marina Jirotka, and Helena Karasti Scientific collaboration using cyberinfrastructure (CI), or e-Science, is forward facing. e-Science projects aim to support the collaboration of research communities, whether by facilitating distanced collaboration or sharing data and computational resources. The most ambitious e-Science projects are creating entirely novel scientific fields, anticipating and actively cultivating new scientific…

Paper Presented at ECSCW 2009

Matt and Charlotte recently returned from the European Conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work (ECSCW) in beautiful and elegant Vienna, Austria. In addition to enjoying the local sites and cuisine, they attended a one-day workshop on Infrastructures and Infrastructuring and also presented their paper “Collaboration in Metagenomics: Sequence Databases and the Organization of Scientific Work” in the main conference. Abstract: In this paper we conduct an ethnographic study of work to explore the interaction between scientific collaboration and computing technologies…

Kindle DX Pilot Project – Forbes article

The Amazon Kindle DX pilot project continues to attract national attention. Forbes just wrote up a brief article on the project, which provides a quick look at how a few of the other schools in the project consortium are studying the Kindle DX in the classroom. Our study starts in late September 2009 and runs through the school year.  We can’t wait to get started!

Kindle DX Pilot Project

In Fall 2009, each incoming University of Washington Computer Science & Engineering graduate student will receive a Kindle DX, Amazon’s latest wireless reading device, to use in place of traditional printed textbooks and research papers in their first-year graduate courses. The students also will receive textbooks and other required reading materials free of charge for the Kindle DX. We will conduct usability assessments with a specific focus on the Kindle DX’s annotation facilities. Check out the pilot web page for…

New Lab Space

When HCDE moved into Sieg Hall this quarter, we got a new lab space. We’re still working out the quirks, but we’re making progress. The computers are here (and the software is supposed to be on the way) and we’ve got our table, chairs, and whiteboards. Now if we just had a few books on those shelves and a nice potted plant or two…

CFP: Supporting Scientific Collaboration Through Cyberinfrastructure and e-Science

Scientific collaboration using cyberinfrastructure (CI), or e-Science, is forward facing. e-Science projects aim to support the collaboration of research communities, whether by facilitating distanced collaboration or sharing data and computational resources. The most ambitious e-Science projects are creating entirely novel scientific fields, anticipating and actively cultivating new scientific communities and practices. Such endeavors present original challenges to researchers in CSCW fields: questions of large-scale technology development, of supporting communities in addition to groups, and of long-term sustainability.

Data Collection Begins

Charlotte and I are starting data collection for our NSF study on Leveraging Development Expertise Across Cyberinfrastructures (OCI-083860). This grant grew out of a realization about projects we were studying in medical research, biology, engineering, and the humanities: even though our focus was on what was going on inside these projects, much of the development work spanned multiple projects. Our participants told us about “leveraging” and “synergies” in a way that suggested that these were important aspects of their work,…

Standards for Systematic Qualitative Research

The NSF has just released the report from a 2005 workshop on Interdisciplinary Standards for Systematic Qualitative Research. The workshop brought together 24 scholars from cultural anthropology, law and social science, political science, and sociology to: articulate the standards used in their particular field to ensure rigor across the range of qualitative methodological approaches; identify common criteria shared across the four disciplines for designing and evaluating research proposals and fostering multidisciplinary collaborations; and develop an agenda for strengthening the tools,…

New Spring Research Group – Computer Supported Collaboration

How do we cooperate through computerized tools? How does computerization change the way we interact with our workmates and our friends? How does computerization change the way science is done? This research group will look at particular instances of Computer Supported Cooperative Work (CSCW) to understand aspects of how our lives as social beings interweave with our technology-filled world. This research group will focus on topics in Computer Supported Cooperative Work. Some of the group will be doing preliminary research…
