No evidence pointed to an obesity prevalence of 35% or higher in any US state in 2012, but the number increased to 19 states in 2021 and 22 states in 2022, according to a CDC report. Adult obesity prevalence was highest among Black adults, according to the report. “[W]e know the key strategies that work include addressing the underlying social determinants of health such as access to health care, healthy and affordable food, and safe places for physical activity," said Karen Hacker, who directs the CDC’s National Center for Chronic Disease Prevention and Health Promotion.
