CVD risk in diabetes tied to advanced glycation end products, oxidation products

A study in Diabetes Care showed that higher levels of certain advanced glycation end products and lower levels of the oxidation product methionine sulfoxide were associated with an increased risk for cardiovascular disease among adults with type 2 diabetes. Researchers used a cohort of 716 patients with and without diabetes from the Veterans Affairs Diabetes Trial and the ACCORD study and found that those with prior CVD had higher carboxymethyl lysine, glyoxal hydroimidazolone and 3-deoxyglucosone hydroimidazolone, compared with those without prior CVD.
