Effects of cannabis use on T1D patients presenting DKA symptoms

A study in Diabetes Care found that patients with type 1 diabetes who had diabetic ketoacidosis symptoms had higher pH and bicarbonate levels after using cannabis, compared with those who didn’t use cannabis. Including high pH and bicarbonate levels — along with high anion gap, high venous blood glucose and high beta-hydroxybutyrate levels — as diagnostic criteria could help better predict “hyperglycemic ketosis due to cannabis hyperemesis syndrome" events, researcher Halis Kaan Akturk said.
