Introduction |
|
As our consumption patterns
continue to grow, the energy demanded to meet these needs parallel
this growth. Current sources of energy are becoming increasingly scarce.
Our dependence on fossil fuels has already begun to degrade the health
of our environment and will most definitely decrease the health of
the planet for future generations. Fortunately, a variety of alternative
energy sources are available. Wind power is one of today's most promising
alternatives to our society's current dependence on fossil fuels.
Wind energy can be harnessed by the use of windmills and turbines
and then converted to electrical power or mechanical energy for other
applications such as water pumping. Wind power relies on a resource
that is readily available and at no cost. Wind power can be adapted
to a variety of site scales, producing enough energy to power a single
residence or an entire region. Wind energy developments are currently
used in many countries to support a variety of energy needs. Still,
wind turbines are being criticized for their visual impact on the
landscape and thus have become an important design issue. |
