Like many of you, we the Global Health Justice (GHJ) team have seen the heart-wrenching images and videos of torture, forced starvation and murder of innocent Sudanese coming out of Al-Fasher over the past few days. The Rapid Support Forces (RSF), who are directly being funded by the United Arab Emirates (UAE), a “Major Defense Partner” of the U.S., have invaded the city after laying siege on it for over 18 months. We’ve seen the videos of young children being tortured, read reports of the RSF raping of girls and women and watched with our own eyes the mass murder of innocent humanitarians gunned down by the RSF for simply daring to bring food into the besieged city filled with starving families.
We, the GHJ team, in the harshest of terms condemn the targeting and massacre of innocent Sudanese children, women, and men by the RSF. We condemn the UAE government’s funding and support of this genocidal militia–the very same militia that committed similar atrocities in Darfur in the early 2000s. We condemn the international media’s lack of equitable coverage and raising awareness on both the atrocities committed by the RSF and of the Sudanese war in general since its start early spring of 2023. We condemn the disregard for and the cheapening of Black people’s blood, pain and suffering.
We extend our support, love and compassion to all of our Sudanese family, friends, and colleagues both within the Global Health Department, across the University of Washington and the city of Seattle at large. We encourage our readers and community members to extend their support to our Sudanese brothers and sisters who have to watch their families and loved ones suffer while the rest of the world watches in complacency.
We encourage faculty members and teaching teams to speak out against these atrocities supported by our ally and to reach out to and provide accommodations to their Sudanese students as needed. Lastly, we encourage everyone to read the articles on our website regarding the war in Sudan and raise awareness within their communities. We will be updating our website with information and resources on how you can continue to be of support to our beloved Sudanese brothers and sisters.
يا رب بردا ولطفا وسلاما لاهالينا في السودان.
Lord please grant coolness, grace and peace
