Global WACh Co-Director Anjuli Wagner nominated for the 2025 UW Minority Faculty Mentoring Award

Congratulations to Dr. Anjuli Wagner, Associate Professor in the Department of Global Health and Global WACh Co-Director, for being nominated for the UW School of Medicine’s Committee on Minority Faculty Advancement (CMFA) Minority Faculty Mentoring Award.

This award recognizes faculty who demonstrate an outstanding commitment to mentoring faculty from communities underrepresented in medicine and science. Its purpose is to celebrate someone who fosters inclusive professional growth and improves diversity, equity, and representation within the University of Washington School of Medicine.

Dr. Wagner is well known for her scientific expertise as an implementation scientist with global health focus. She has provided mentorship through all phases of career development, including undergraduates, masters, pre- and post-doctoral fellows, and junior faculty—coaching individuals to attain their goals while helping with scientific mentorship as trainees develop manuscripts and grants. She is involved in many programs and initiatives within Global WACh and the Department of Global Health where her compassion and advocacy are felt, such as the Global WACh Graduate Certificate Program, Working in Implementation SciencE (WISE) Working Group, and Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee. She also co-convenes a weekly peer mentorship group supporting Kenyan faculty and student researchers in their academic and professional development.

Excerpts from faculty and student nomination letters attest to her deep commitment to fostering an inclusive and supportive environment:

“Dr. Wagner is a rare mentor – extraordinarily gifted, devoted to helping mentees and a strong scientist who helps mentees who are underrepresented develop relevant high impact science, promote new directions, and build vibrant research and teaching programs that are essential for improving science and learning for the next generation. She has exceptional dedication to promoting faculty who are underrepresented, helping them navigate the systems in the Departments of School, to develop professional and social networks, and to understand the hidden curriculum.”

“The impact of Dr. Wagner’s mentorship on my professional development cannot be overstated. Her guidance has empowered me to become a more effective mentor to my students, fostering a culture of inclusivity and support within my own academic circles. Her influence extends beyond individual mentorship; she has contributed significantly to the broader community by advocating for minority faculty members and promoting diversity within the department.”

“What stands out most about Dr. Wagner is her belief that that students are whole people whose lives outside academia shape their abilities to thrive. She never perceived mentorship as a transaction. She brought energy, hope, and steady encouragement exactly when I needed it most. She was never tired and remained generous with her time and intellect.”

Our team at Global WACh is extremely fortunate to work with Dr. Wagner and we are excited to celebrate this nomination. Congratulations!
