How to Become a Senator! And more! (Click for links)

Students interested in becoming a GPSS senator should fill out this senator interest form before Wednesday, October 20 by noon – you must be logged into your UW NetID to access this form. Each program has up to 2 open seats, including separate seats reserved for different degrees or concentrations. Although each graduate program has different processes for nominating and electing senators, we wanted to make students aware they can still join the Senate if their programs’ seats are not filled.

We will contact interested students and work with their departments to make our senate as representative of our campus community as possible. If more students express interest than there are seats available, we must hold elections amongst a programs’ graduate students.

Please contact the GPSS Office at gpss@uw.edu for more information.

Services and Activities Fee (SAF) and Student Technology Fee (STF) Liaisons

Each year, most graduate students pay close to $570 in student fees. Collectively, this helps fund close to $30 million in student life resources at the UW. GPSS has 4 appointments to SAF and 3 appointments to STF. These positions are open to any graduate student interested in serving on these committees.

SAF: ~$20 million serving 17 units on campus; meets at 1-3 on Fridays in HUB 303

STF: ~$10 million for 75+ proposals across campus each year; meets at 3:30-5:30 on Mondays in HUB 303

We know graduate students are extremely busy, but grad students are experts in their fields who provide unique perspectives crucial to making big decisions with university-wide impact. In an upcoming Fall meeting, GPSS will vote on the appropriate levels of these fees.

Please contact A.J. Balatico, GPSS VP of Finance, at gpssvpfb@uw.edu for questions and feedback or to express interest in joining one of the committees.

GPSS Travel Grants Committee

GPSS provides $25,000 in supplemental travel grants. Students presenting, facilitating, or attending an academic or professional conference can be awarded $300 for travel in the U.S., $500 abroad, or registration fees for online conferences. See the Travel Grants website for more info.

The committee to review these applications must form from 6 currently enrolled graduate students. Besides an initial training meeting, the work of this committee can be done asynchronously. Technical expertise across subjects is not required. The applications rubric from the previous academic year will be used for Fall applications. The committee will then provide guidance on how to help as many students as quickly, accurately, and equitably with their travel experiences.
Please contact A.J. Balatico, GPSS VP of Finance, at gpssvpfb@uw.edu for questions or to express interest in joining the Travel Grants Committee.
