Katherine has been experimenting with the unexpected on the grounds of Avant Gardens. She is also a garden photographer, writer & a lecturer.     Celebrate the first summer of the Miyawaki urban forest, densely planted last December with 1200 plants. Visit the forest to check out the 43 native species, labelled with bilingual English-Lushootseed signs & listen to drumming from different cultures. Master gardeners will help you find the right plant for the right place in your garden. Payment methods include credit, checks or cash. Hydrangeas, late season magnolias, hardy fuchsias & many other plants extend the flowering season into summer. The center is one of the largest non-profit gardening resource hubs in the nation, providing gardening advice to thousands of visitors & callers across the US & world. The presentation begins with a brief introduction to conservation biological control in gardens & discusses why this approach is ideally suited to landscape settings. Frédérique Lavoipierre teaches, writes & works as a consultant. She holds a masters degree in biology with an emphasis on ecological principles of sustainable landscapes & serves on the board of Pacific Horticulture. Recording will be available for 3 weeks.     Free. Advance registration is required. Join Friends of Seattle's Olmsted Parks for an in-person guided tour of Schmitz Preserve Park. This park is one of only two Seattle parks where our magnificent old-growth coniferous forest is still largely intact. The Olmsted Brothers firm developed design drawings for the park in 1909. The design included a shelter house & pergola, a trail system, a scenic pool, & waterfalls within the park.
