Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

How can students cut down on emissions?

IJustWantToMakeAnAccountPlease

Carbon emissions aren't just exclusive to adults and the elderly, just about everyone on Earth with access to modern technology is capable of producing a Carbon Footprint. Students also do this with the amount of technology that surrounds them. What I would like to do is propose a system for managing carbon footprint emissions in a school setting with a new strategy that will actually get kids to contribute.

I know that, at my school, there is a club at our school called Windplanners. They’re all dedicated to lowering the carbon emissions at our school. They’ve convinced our administration to install solar panels and a wind turbine, both of which have significantly lowered our carbon emission. They also planned to do “No Fast Fashion” and “Heck Yeah Hand-Me-Downs” in February and are actively pursuing to lessen our carbon footprint. Along with that amazing club, we compost most of our food. There’s a group of dedicated students that year-round sort the compost and then bury it. For at least a week, every student has to do this in their Global Science class. There are still improvements to be made—for example, we still use plastic cutlery—but I believe it’s a step in the right direction.
