Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

Reducing mass plastic

imjude42

Plastic has been a huge factor in pollution for more than a decade, and every year, it gets worse. In 2014 alone, the world produced over 310 tons of plastic, and the amounts has been growing every year since 1950. Reducing the amount of plastic we consume on a daily basis can effect the earth in a very positive way, but to greatly lower the plastic pollution, their needs to be more alternatives to all the plastic items used in our daily lives. Also a larger, more extreme solution could be to limit production of plastic items such as soda bottles and plastic bags by large companies and by major factories.

Yes! I agree. I feel like we need to cut down on plastic. The plastic that we use is harmful for other animals as well. Although we have a 10 cent tax on every plastic bag we want in a grocery store that sells milk, it is not lowering our consumption of plastic bags. For instance, we have plastic trash bags that we use and they are harmful to the environment in all of the same ways. However, we do not have a great alternative for plastic bags. We can use paper bags but we would have to cut down more trees which is something we cannot afford to do.

I agree, it seems like there is a new problem added to every time we solve one. However, instead of using more plastic, we can use compost. If you have noticed, the untencils we use at Bishop O'Dowd are compostable. They have already made compostable water bottles. This article explains about biodegradable vs compostable http://paperwaterbottle.com/back-to-the … mpostable/

We certainly can do all of those things, and in some places, there are large fees on plastic shopping bags which have helped to significantly reduce their number and use. Those bags would find their way to the ocean, and become part of the pacific Garbage Patch (I think thats the name), which is already twice the size of TEXAS. It was such a huge problem that a man named Jeremy Irons made a mockumentary to outline the problem called The Majestic Plastic Bag.
Another thing that we can do is try to not get foods that come in plastic containers, which are very, very non-compostable most of the time. Foods like the Fast Food Salads, water bottles, and sometimes even the foods themselves will come in a plastic case which is nearly impossible to reuse and will become part of the mass of swirling plastic. Also, disposable utensils. EUCH
A great replacement that has recently been invented is EDIBLE CUTLERY. It is a great idea as not only are they EDIBLE and don't have to  been thrown away, they save water and energy as you EAT THEM when you are done with your food.
