The ISCFC is all about reducing our individual and collective contributions to climate change.
But is climate change really happening? Is it mostly caused by human activity, including our production of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases?
In the United States and elsewhere, there are people who are not convinced by the science. But the great thing about science is that we use evidence to evaluate scientific questions. So what is the evidence related to climate change?
Are you or are you not convinced by the majority of climate scientists who say that climate change is real and largely human caused? Why are you convinced/not convinced? What evidence might change your mind one way or the other?
Is Climate Change Real & Human-Caused? >
Climate change real or human caused
Both, because people do, make the climate change.
How do people make climate change? Can you give some examples?
Great Questions! Climate change encompasses all parts of the climate changing (temperature, humidity, atmospheric pressure, etc.), but a subset of climate change that refers to the change in temperature as a result of increased carbon dioxide in the atmosphere called global warming might be what you are referring to since many people talk about how humans are contributing to a warming earth instead of just the broader climate. (Described further in detail from the British Geological Survey linked here:https://www.bgs.ac.uk/discovering-geology/climate-change/how-does-the-greenhouse-effect-work/#:~:text=Greenhouse%20gases,-The%20greenhouse%20effect&text=The%20effect%20of%20this%20is,and%20eventually%20lost%20to%20space) global warming is a result of an excess of greenhouse gasses. Gasses such as carbon dioxide that absorb infrared radiation from the sun in the form of heat energy which is then circulated through the atmosphere until the heat gets lost to space. When an excess amount of CO2 and other greenhouse gasses are released into the atmosphere, more heat is trapped, and that means a warmer Earth. Although CO2 levels and their corresponding temperatures in the past have fallen and risen, an exponential growth in CO2 levels since around the industrial revolution has indicated humans are at fault for the warming globe. (This graph from NASA helps illustrate how much CO2 humans have added to the atmosphere: https://climate.nasa.gov/evidence/) There are countless ways humans release CO2 into the atmosphere, but one huge way is transportation of individuals or goods. Everytime someone burns gasoline to transport themselves, other goods to be bought by other people, etc. more and more CO2 is released into the atmosphere, quickly in geological time, warming the Earth. I hope this helps!
