Fast Fashion

margaretwynn

Many people want to buy the latest fashion trends, whether they need them or not. An issue that plagues modern-day society is fast fashion. Fast fashion is the mass distribution of cheap and low-quality clothing, most of it being made in sweatshops. Several companies have revolutionized the fast fashion movement, such as Romwe, Shein, and Forever 21. Fast fashion pieces are created by workers earning incredibly low wages, this being reflected in the quality of the clothing. Most people who buy fast fashion do it for the current trends. Unfortunately, once these trends are out of style, the clothes are thrown away or donated. Textile waste is incredibly damaging to the environment, and one way or another, these thrown away or donated clothes will end up in a landfill. Instead of buying dozens of cheap pieces, I suggest buying a few timeless and ethically made pieces instead. Thrifting is also an ethical way to shop. Supporting fast fashion has damaging consequences, and the only way to stop the companies responsible is to stop purchasing from them.

I agree completely, the rate at which fashion trends change and the wasteful way in which we buy simply to match said trend has incredibly harsh effects on the environment. We must curb our need to fit in to the newest trend to save the environment.

I completely agree. Through social media i have seen many videos of ‘hauls’ from a brand called Shein. Shein has very cheap and not great quality clothing that is definitely not sustainable. This brand has become very popular because it keeps up with teen fashion trends and is also affordable for the age group. People are spending hundreds of dollars on this low-quality clothing that will fall apart easily and get thrown out. I feel like with social media people are unable to grasp the idea of sustainability. Also Since the clothing trends shift so quickly clothing waste increases. All of your points are absolutely true, but its hard to get the younger generation with less money on board with buying sustainably. Thrifting is a great option because its affordable and can have some ‘trendy’ clothing too. Fast fashion is clearly a section people aren’t educated enough in.

Very true. I see a lot of people buy clothing because it looks nice or it will loo good in this outfit and buy the a nod many other clothes just to where the clothes they already had. I personally buy clothes for comfort and where them until they’re either destroyed or unwearable and if i have something i don’t need and don’t wear i donate it for others to use so it doesn’t go to waste. I believe if we as a species can overcome these trends and being cool by wearing what others wear and just dressed for yourself things would be better in that regard.

I agree with you. Nowadays people like to buy new clothes every month on Internet. Sometimes the prices of the clothes are too high for the values. And people just waste their money for nothing. They could use recycle.

I agree with all of you. The over-consumption pollutes a lot and in addition, it makes children work in awful conditions. They risk their life, their health to make clothes for people who want to buy trendy clothes at a cheap price. They don't realize that more than polluting, they are breaking lives just to have a cool dress, t-shirt. Moreover, when the clothes don't fit, they can send it back and it makes more pollution by travelling. We have to talk about fast-fashion brands to our friends to aware them. We have to stop buying these brands!!

I completely agree with everyone, and because of the overconsumption of social media there are new fashion trends every week. Fast fashion is huge and most people have purchased at least a few clothes from fast fashion brands. Huge companies like Fashion nova or Shein have low-quality clothes that are extremely bad and wasteful for the environment. The workers creating these clothes work in unhealthy conditions working with toxic chemicals, no breaks, crowded factories, low ventilated spaces and so much more. On top of that, they are barely being paid. These fast fashion brands can be very secretive and shady about what their working conditions are and how much they pay their employees. Supporting high-end eco-friendly brands can sometimes be expensive but they are worth it because of the quality and you know you aren't harming the environment. For a less expensive option, I suggest thrifting, there are thrift stores everywhere and you do have to do some searching but once you find something you love you won't stop thrifting. You can also donate clothes that can help low-income families and it's better for the environment. If thrifting is too much searching I suggest websites like Depop or Thred up, which are online consignment stores. They have a variety of different clothes and it's so easy to buy things from actual sellers. I have bought clothes from both websites numerous times and I'm never disappointed. Changing how you shop is no easy task but if you find a website that you love you will never switch back.
