Is Climate Change Real & Human-Caused?

The ISCFC is all about reducing our individual and collective contributions to climate change.

But is climate change really happening? Is it mostly caused by human activity, including our production of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases?

In the United States and elsewhere, there are people who are not convinced by the science. But the great thing about science is that we use evidence to evaluate scientific questions. So what is the evidence related to climate change?

Are you or are you not convinced by the majority of climate scientists who say that climate change is real and largely human caused? Why are you convinced/not convinced? What evidence might change your mind one way or the other?

I believe that climate change is real and that it is human caused.

I believe this because most of the things heating up the earth are cars or any traveling transportation.

I agree with you and I think that there are a lot of ways to go from one place to another without using cars. For example, we can use bikes and even walk. These are both great forms of exercise and won't do any harm or cause climate change.

To expand on both points, climate changed isn’t just human caused because of transportation emissions. There are numerous contributors to climate change, and transportation happens to be one of them. Biking and walking places definitely improve your own carbon footprint but there should also be sustainable options such as more affordable electric public transportation for people to use who don’t have the ability to walk/bike places. Major contributors to climate change include power plants and deforestation/agriculture. Power plants constantly burn fossil fuels to generate enough power for a steam turbine to allow electricity to reach great distances. Deforestation contributes to emissions because often times large expanses of trees/forests are burned to create more space for agriculture.

I believe that climate change is human caused, and I agree with all statements made above. In a CarbonBrief article it states that since 1850 close to all of global warming was and is caused by greenhouse gas emissions and by other activities humans do and cause. There is also a 95% - 100% likelihood that more than half of climate change is human caused. (If you would like to learn more here is the link Analysis: Why scientists think 100% of global warming is due to humans.) I do think that transportation is a very large part of climate change, but I think that other large parts of climate change that are just as bad or even worse are big sources of power, such as buildings and cutting down forests. To elaborate, big power sources such as buildings take up more than half of electricity. They utilize fossil fuels such as coal and oil. They also use natural gas for air conditioning, heaters, etc. Buildings release a notable amount of greenhouse gas emissions. Cutting down forests. Humans generally cut down forests to make room for farms and pastures for animals. When trees are cut down they release all of the carbon dioxide they had been storing. As said before, forests hold in carbon dioxide, so when cut it’s hard to stop what’s being released out of the atmosphere. Based on all of the information I’ve learned, I do think that the cause of climate change is 100% humans.

I agree that climate change is human caused. But I would also like to add on that it is the big companies that are contributing the most. The big companies contribute a lot to climate change. But their not just going to stop, because they want and need the money. It would also be really hard for big companies to switch to other better ways. It's because it's going to cost a lot of money and time and also there isn't really a way that they can not pollute. Almost every business contributes to pollution by using supply chains and operations. Big buildings need to heat their whole building and that pollutes a lot. And harmful gases get released into the air. But I also do agree that we contribute a lot to climate change. Everyday people are always driving around using cars and that contributes a lot to pollution.

I think that climate change is mostly human caused

I agree that Climate change is mostly caused by Transmissions from gas-powered vehicles, but I think air pollution from factories is an even greater contribution to climate change.
