Wants or Needs?

Is having the latest technology a want or a need?

How often do you get a new cel phone or mp3 player? Did you really need a new model? Do you consider the environmental impact of these purchases? If you are addicted, how can you break your addiction?

This is a big factor where I am from, people often buy things that they want and its not environmentally friendly. These items can be harmful to our carbon footprint. There is no reason to purchase these items that are environmentally costly if it doesn't benefit us. https://resources4rethinking.ca/en/reso … s-vs-wants

I agree about this being a big factor from where you're from as where I'm from it is the same.

I agree with this, many people do buy what they want most of the time and when they do it's not environmentally friendly like buying a high-gas-powered car instead d of going with the electric or low gas-powered car.

I agree with you. I often find myself wanting to buy unnecessary items, and if i purchase them i regret it, however It’s a hard thing to control because not all people are not buying unnecessary items because they don’t care about the environment, I think it mostly comes down to unawareness. I believe Educating people about purchases would great to helping reduce waste. However I am aware that there are some people don’t care if their purchase is environmentally reasonable.

I agree and I think there is a big culture of consumerism in this generation. Companies are always pushing products and trends which influence what people feel like they need to buy. Especially with fast fashion, trends are very short lived and people are always wanting more things which leads to a lot of overconsumption because most people want to be on trend and to have what the rich or popular people have. That, added to the runaway capitalism controlling this country, contributes to the constant mass production and mass spending and buying that in turn contribute to rising carbon footprints. I also think that there is a behavior deficit because people know that what they do is bad for the environment, but they either ignore it or simply don’t care, and if we want to reduce the waste that comes with overconsumption, we need to emphasize more on environmental safety than trend following.

I agree with you I also think is peoples lack of knowledge is a factor, if they were more educated on how their purchase would effect the climate they would steer away or at least try to find a better option. I found myself recognizing things i had and bought thinking they were okay were in fact bad for the environment and now either find new uses and stop buying them for find a different and better solution.
