Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

How can I decrease my carbon footprint?

michele14

My ecological footprint is higher than the Italian average, I absolutely have to work hard to lower this value, I noticed that the highest value is that of transport which is 3500kgs, this is because I travel a lot just to go to school, how can I decrease this value?

CharDel12

I’m not completely sure what your means of transportation are but if you drive an independent vehicle, I would suggest carpooling with others or maybe considering an electric vehicle.

Hey there! Good question, friend. There is a multitude of ways to lower your carbon footprint, including CharDel12's option: carpool and try to drive less. A few other ways include driving an electric car if possible, taking public transportation, and recycling. However, to narrow down your options and focus on one big change, the easiest thing to do is simple: buy less stuff! The less stuff you purchase, the less packaging you're wasting. Also, if you stop buying from mass production companies that are producing carbon into the air, you are also slightly lowering your carbon footprint. Next, when you do buy things, make sure you are recycling the packaging! That makes a big difference because plastic does not need to be wasted on a 10-dollar t-shirt. To continue, I try to thrift a lot of my clothing so that I don't use packaging and new clothing. My parents also drive an electric car, and when we're not riding in an electric vehicle, we bike or walk where we can. What have you done to lower the total carbon footprint? Thanks for reading!

I totally agree with juscBOD's comment! I think a lot of people underestimate the amount of pollution just purchasing simple things like groceries. Buying recyclable packaging and pesticide-free food can make a big difference. Another thing that can often be overlooked is the impact of taking airplanes. As noted by the New York Times, flying is often the biggest portion of people's carbon footprint and this can be easily countered. One way to combat these contribution to global warming is by using a carbon offset for travel. I recommend using the "sustainable travel" link below. Obviously, the best way to offset your flying carbon footprint would be to not fly, but if you must, it only costs about 20 dollars to fully offset a flight to New York. A carbon offset organization donates to renewable energy corporations and others which counter climate change.
