Student Footprints

Students from around the world calculated their class mean and standard deviations for their footprints and posted them on our world map.

Do you see differences across the globe? If so, why do you think those differences exist?

Did you use the calculator to try to reduce your footprint down to the average from a citizen of another country? What changes would you have to make to lower your footprint in this way? Are you going to try and take some of these actions in your daily life?

A/C & Heating

joshmannix

The nest thermostat is a heating and cooling thermeostst that lerns from the habits of the residents. They report 10% to 12% reduction in heating and 15% reduction in cooling for people who use the thermostat. These tests were run in 41 diffrent states. This thermostat is something everyone should own to save energy and reduce their carbon footprint.

Rapping up in a nice warm blanket is always a good option.

Another idea would be to only use the heat or AC when needed. During the winter months wearing a heavy sweater or using a natural wool blanket works too. In fact, wool is a great heat insulator and it has a unique breathability, allowing it to maintain insulation while wet. In summer months, having a cold, refreshing drink or putting a towel soaked in cold water on your head works too.

backbllis

I agree If you wear the proper layers you should not need to use the AC.

joshmannix

Some people dont live in tempertures like we have in California. In cold winter climate that last's for long periods of time a sweater or blanket will not do the trick.

backbllis

Unless you have 16 blankets

xxx_dabbdaddy_xxx

I agree with Jack's Idea

xxx_dabbdaddy_xxx

He really knows how to back it up with the facts

joshmannix

What do you propose in 120 degree heat, like in Arizona? A cold towel?

xxx_dabbdaddy_xxx

I propose a cold towel with that is replaced every now and then, along with a cold drink and relaxation in the shade.

backbllis

No simply dip yourself in rain water you have saved

xxx_dabbdaddy_xxx

Another great point sir!

backbllis

Thank you your chivalry

joshmannix

Jack E. and Logan B. these are facts well supported by scientific evidence. I'm so pleased to be in the presence of fellow environmental science scholars. Let us continue to broaden our minds. I will invest in a hefty rain catcher for the unseasonably warm summer months. Tally ho!

xxx_dabbdaddy_xxx

Very eloquently written you dashing young scholar!

backbllis

What a striking and charming young man we should all meet for freshly squeezed carrot juice

joshmannix

I'll instruct the chef to sqeeze the carrots post haste!

xxx_dabbdaddy_xxx

I agree sir, maybe we could all share my artisanal juice presser for a fun get-together and share a story or two!

backbllis

Sounds jolly fun please though i must ask that you refrain from bringing sheep as their wool will simply kill me
